Matthäus Passion

More than 30 years ago our conductor Robert Bakker came up with an abridged version of the Matthäus Passion for the first time in the Netherlands. Given the normal length of about three hours, he considered the long version less suitable for young people, people who wanted to get acquainted with the piece for the first time, the sick, people who could not sit longer, etc. Moreover, he wanted to use his Voice Company Choir are not competitive for all those other respectable choirs in the Netherlands that perform the full version every year.
To make a shorter version of about an hour and a half, he selected a rich palette of choral works and corals. Just like with the performances in Bach’s time, the audience can sing the corals (in German). The cooperating soloists sing two arias in this version. And for the evangelist party, he uses a professional actor who reads the prescribed texts exactly at the right places. In Dutch. This way the audience is fully involved in the story and understands the accompanying music much better. This accessible version is therefore always very well received by the public with many compliments as a result.
